We left our hotel in The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservatory and traveled to Kenya and the Masai Mara Region. We flew taking off from an air strip that was on site at the hotel property. No zebras on this air strip :-) We had to pack everything into our duffles again for this part of trip. You can see them below, ready to be loaded on the plane.

  • When we landed we immediately boarded our safari vehicle and did a game drive on the way to our new hotel. The first animals we saw were mongooses. They are very cute and resemble a meerkat, which is one of my favorites, but they don't live in this part of Africa. A few fun facts are about mongooses:

    • the Plural Is 'Mongooses,' But It's OK to Say 'Mongeese' ...

    • there Are About 30 Mongoose Species Around the World. ...

    • they Have a Few Tricks for Defeating Venomous Snakes. ...

    • they Have Diverse Diets...

    • some Species Are Semiaquatic...

    • some Are Loners, Some Live in Mobs

Next we had a wonderful surprise, we got to see two white rhinos up close and personal. White rhinos are very rare and this Animal Conservancy is trying to breed a pair. They also have to have them protected 24 hours a day from poachers. They have game wardens who stay with them at all times. Their names are Queen Elizabeth and Kofi Annan (UN Secretary General of the UN from Ghana). Queen Elizabeth is behind Don and I and in the second picture. Kofi Annan is in the third and fourth pictures. Unfortunately, the pair have not mated, as they think they have gotten too familiar and feel like brother and sister. For the first time we got to get out of our safari jeep and walk near the animals. So very cool.

We then got to our hotel. It is a tented hotel. Our tent is next to a river in which hippos swim by so we can hear and see the hippos from our porch. We can hear them sometimes in our tent. We have to be careful about keeping our tent zipped as monkeys like to sneak in. The chair is to block the monkey's access.

Late in the afternoon we went for another game drive. The unique thing about his area is the safari jeeps can 'off road' and get closer to the animals. The first animal we saw were elephants. We even saw a baby elephant.

At the end of our drive we got to see a male lion up close. How exciting. We had seen a large male lion before but he was up on a rock. It was so exciting this time to be closer. He was amazing.

Another incredible day on safari. Every time we think we can't see anything more or unique we do. Tomorrow is our last day. The trip has gone by so quickly!

Thanks for following along.
